Taishi Hatayama Solo Exhibition “Close to Time, Close to Space”

EUKARYOTE

Information

EUKARYOTE is pleased to announce Taishi Hatayama’s Solo Exhibition, “Close to Time, Close to Space”, through April 7th to April 30th.

Taishi Hatayama has continued his quest for things beyond human intellect and higher worlds through his paintings. He was selected for “VOCA 2023”, and presented a painting measuring 3.6 meters in width, whose scale is the largest in five years after the works shown at the Sezon Museum of Contemporary Art. Until last year, he had kept a distance from himself to stand with the world under the pandemic, attempting to capture the surrounding environment or space from an objective point of view. Consequently, his canvases were covered with fast brushstrokes at that time. This year, however, Hatayama works on each canvas deliberately as if he were diving inside himself, accumulating various brushstrokes, rectangles, and forms that evoke depth.
Before producing the paintings for this exhibition, the artist visited Shirakami Mountains where he saw the landscape devasted by heavy rains and landslides. He says this experience became a moment that his works incorporated the disquiet and harshness. That landscape is completely unlike the nature harmonious and familiar to humans that has hitherto been his inspiration. That is the nature in which life and death circulate in equal value.

MORE EXHIBITION

EUKARYOTE is an art space which has been established in Jingumae, Tokyo, in 2018. Within the concept of something more than an occurrence of art, there is an ever spinning contemporary coin of tangibility and intangibility, and it is this essence, this universal value held by artworks and artists, which is actively accepted but left behind.
